Ms. Barrera, along with Assistant Artist Zeke Jenei, has worked at the high school, running an after-school program as well as integrating the visual arts into three classrooms: world history, math and Spanish.
Ms. Barrera is now in the design and execution phase of creating a large outdoor mural that will adorn the westward facing walls of the high school.
The mural will celebrate the identity of the school with a colorful design that depicts the optimism of youth and the natural environment of their home countries of origin.
Ms. Barrera synthesizes visual aspects of artwork created by her Esperanza stu-dents into a cohesive and dynamic mural that will be difficult to ignore.
The large outdoor mural is scheduled to be completed and installed over the summer. There will be a mural dedication scheduled for some time in the fall after students return.
The partnership at Esperanza Academy Charter School is made possible by the William Penn Foundation.
