On Thursday, March 2, 2017 the Esperanza Chess Team battled it out with Masterman beneath an Egyptian Sphinx in the Penn Museum of Archeology in the Philadelphia Scholastic Chess Finals. Facing a middle school team that had been playing since kindergarten and whose average rating is double the Esperanza Team, the students fought hard on all seven boards.
Though narrowly missing the winning points on a few boards, the Esperanza Chess Team showed that they would not to be taken lightly. Winning one board and forcing a stalemate on two others the Chess Team proved that they deserve the title as the number two rated team in Philadelphia
. This rating has landed the team a place in the State Scholastic Championship this week, and an opportunity at the Super Nationals in May.
Our team even received a little press time! Check out the CBS Philly article.
